Is 75F an energy management system? The easy answer is yes, but the whole truth is that our capabilities and energy savings extend far beyond that of a typical energy management system, or EMS.
You might be thinking about installing an energy management system in your restaurant, office, retail or warehouse space. But before you do, you should know that an energy management system has limited capabilities. Essentially, an EMS meters energy use, monitors sensors such as thermometers, and turns things on and off based on a fixed schedule. It doesn’t change the efficiency of the equipment itself. Therefore, savings are strictly limited to reduced run times. Depending on how much the equipment was turned on before the EMS was installed, you will likely see typical savings of less than 10% for EMS installations.
The last big EMS technology refresh was around 10 years ago. But since then, cloud computing and the Internet of Things have changed the technology landscape and most energy management system companies are still catching up. A typical EMS can monitor and control a building’s energy loads, while turning equipment on and off. But it can’t predict loads and it won’t proactively control equipment.
An EMS does not improve the efficiency of the equipment in place. It can only turn the equipment on and off, monitor things like temperature, and meter power usage. Because there are few parts to install and the benefit is limited, a typical EMS is less expensive than a smart building automation solution.
