How Is the 75F Smart VAV with Reheat Solution Different?
Typical VAV with Reheat System
Typically, your VAV system operates with (roof-top units) RTUs in cool-only mode. The supply air temperature is held constant at 55°F. When a zone falls below its set point, the damper closes and reheat is enabled. When a zone is above its set point, the damper opens fully to allow as much 55°F air as possible into the zone to cool the space quickly. This cycle often involves first cooling and then heating the same air. Introducing the 75F Smart VAV with Reheat Solution
The 75F Smart VAV with Reheat solution enhances the typical VAV with Reheat. It adds airflow temperature sensors upstream and downstream from the heating coils for each zone. RTUs remain in auto mode, and they can add heat if all zones are calling for heat. When this occurs, the 75F solution begins to modulate the reheat valves open. This ensures that air is treated appropriately at the RTU or reheating elements to save energy and optimize comfort.
Additionally, if a recirculating fan is present, available air in the plenum space can be used to minimize wasted reheat energy, making use of preconditioned plenum air.
Similar to some other VAV with Reheat systems, 75F doesn't maintain a constant temperature of 55°F on supply air. Rather, our system finds the optimal supply air temp for the system in coordination with the user's comfort and energy efficiency level set points. The RTU can be optimized to provide "free cooling" when cool outside air is available and only use the cooling coil when absolutely necessary.
Uniquely, 75F Smart VAV with Reheat is a continuous commissioning system that can be synchronized with our Outside Air Optimization solution for greater indoor air quality and energy efficiency. The 75F Smart Node makes automation, remote monitoring and control of your entire HVAC system possible and simple.
The capabilities added by Smart VAV with Reheat mitigate situations in which cooling and heating of the same air are unnecessarily occurring at the same time. The airflow can also be optimized by a two-stage fan, if your RTU has this capability. The two-stage fan makes for a more energy efficient system and greater comfort in the space, since it removes humidity quicker and provides more balanced airflow than a single-stage fan.
So, What Is a Smart Node?
The 75F Smart Node makes much of this possible. It is a flexible, general-purpose wireless communication device that can control and communicate the performance of HVAC equipment with multiple functions, including damper actuators, reheat coils, recirculating fans, RTUs and air handling units (AHUs). The Smart Node operates off 24v with multiple inputs and outputs, offering a large range of measurement and control capabilities through cloud computing technology.
The smart node is the connecting device that allows 75F Smart VAV with Reheat to take control in new and existing facilities. This solution cost-effectively improves efficiency and performance. Facility managers can change temperature set points and comfort levels by zone, create custom schedules, and monitor output air temperatures and damper positions remotely with the Facilisight suite of web and mobile apps.
