Dreaming of a white Christmas? That is what many of us across the U.S. had to do. With record high temperatures across the nation during the 2015 holiday season, a white Christmas was only one that could be experienced in our dreams. Just to name a few record breaking temperatures - 83 degrees in Houston, Texas, 67 degrees in Boston, Massachusetts, 68 degrees in Burlington, Vermont and 66 degrees in New York City.
Even in our own Minnesota backyard, December 2015 will go down as one of the warmest on record. The average high for December 2015 in the Twin Cities was approximately 36 °F or 11°F above average. This may sound frigid to those that are not from the land of 10,000 lakes, but to natives it feels more like spring than it does winter.
Why is the weather of particular interest to 75F? These dramatic weather patterns help to showcase the effectiveness of our Dynamic Airflow Balancing solution. While buildings without our solution are experiencing discomfort, our predictive self-optimizing system is keeping 75F customers very comfortable. With a solution that can anticipate the recent high temperatures, facility managers at 75F buildings are not answering disgruntled calls from occupants. They simply sit back, relax and let the system do the work.
So how do we do this?
To understand how our system works, first you have to understand the thermal model of a building. A building is a dynamic entity. In the morning the eastern part of the building experiences solar gain as the sun rises over the east. As the sun shifts throughout the day, the western part of the building will rise up in temperature. Your typical HVAC system, however, is set up for a static set of conditions. Unlike other HVAC systems on the market today, 75F integrates temperature data from the building every 60 seconds and sends this data to the cloud. Cloud-computing algorithms takes all the historical data to create a thermal model of the building. Then we take weather forecasts to create and send an optimal control strategy back to the building. To put it another way, the 75F system knew that it was not going to be a white Christmas.
The above analytics dashboard was taken from a national chain restaurant here in Minnesota that has implemented the 75F solution. It provides an example of how we have been able to keep their guests comfortable and save energy despite outside temperature fluctuations. The graph showcases the temperature drifts in an area consisting of 6 zones between December 22-24. The lines that display average desired temperature and the average current temperature are practically indistinguishable. Not only that, during unoccupied times the system was automatically set to temperatures that would drive energy savings. Without the 75F system, the restaurant would have been commissioned to respond to the “typical” Minnesota Winter, warming up the building whether or not the area was occupied. With the 75F solution, the system was able to take weather forecasts and proactively commission the building appropriately. It was not a white Christmas, but it was sure a comfortable one!
